Course Objectives
The participant will be
able to:
- Generally describe the research related to handwriting, grasp patterns,
and handwriting assessments
- Analyze the
neuromuscular components of grasp patterns
- State at least five underlying reasons or foundations that would impact
a child’s handwriting
- Identify specifically what a child’s handwriting would look like
based on each underlying reason/foundation
- State the primary attributes and shortfalls of at least three assessments
of handwriting
- Choose the appropriate assessment to address the suspected underlying
reason/foundation for a child’s handwriting difficulty
- List activities to address each foundation of handwriting
- Describe at least four models of handwriting intervention
- Determine how to economically create materials to promote handwriting
skill
- Design a handwriting program with specific activities
Sue Trautman MA,
OTR/L, SWC received a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy and a Master of Arts degree
in Special Education from Western Michigan University. Sue has worked with adults and children in settings which include rehabilitation, home health, neonatal intensive care,
outpatient pediatrics and schools. She is certified
in Swallowing Assessment, Evaluation and Intervention.
Sue currently owns
Center for Developing Kids, a private practice in Pasadena, California that provides occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy
for children. Sue continues to work clinically as well as administratively with expertise primarily in the area of sensory
integration. She has developed many sensory rich environments for schools and clinics and is on the Professional Advisory
Board for Shane’s Inspiration, a group that
creates boundless playgrounds.
Sue has been an instructor for the University of Southern California/Western Psychological Services (USC/WPS) Comprehensive Program in Sensory Integration that offers courses world wide for over 10 years. She is the coordinator of Course 2: Specialized Techniques for Measuring
Sensory Integration. Sue frequently uses the SIPT in practice.
Sue has a son living
in Chicago and a daughter studying
in Russia. Her husband works as a production sound mixer in
the film industry. Sue likes to ski, bicycle, hike, read and spend time with friends and family.
